Itβs crazy how fast time flies. I seriously feel like baby K was born last week. In reality he will be 3 years old soon. ππ I remember how excited I was when we were decorating baby K’s nursery and I had that same feeling of excitement come over me when we upgrading his room to a toddler room. Well first there were tears…then excitement.
This is what the room looked like before. π
This is what it looks like now. π
So much better, right?!?!
I knew when I started this room makeover we didn’t want to spend a ton of money. The good news is, I will DIY anything I can, and I am a wood hoarder. I save every scrap of wood whenever I buy wood to build something. Needless to say, I have built A LOT of things because I already had all the wood I used for the shelves and grocery stand on hand! ππΌ I knew my DIY addiction would come in handy. πΒ Details of the shelves and grocery stand are further down this post.
The first thing I did was rip the carpet out. The carpet was stained, badly. We hired one of our friends to paint the room when we were setting up the nursery and our friend accidentally spilled half a can of paint on the carpet. π³ We got a lot of it up, thank goodness, but there was a large stain left from the initial spill. See.
I used the same flooring that we laid downstairs a few months ago. Peel-and-stick vinyl from Loweβs. The color is Safari. CLICK HERE for details.
After the floor was done, I started painting the walls. We used SW Snowbound. Itβs the same color we used downstairs. I initially wanted to add wallpaper to one of the walls, but the wallpaper I wanted was not in the budget. So we painted all the walls white. And when I say we, I mean, me. π
Next, I focused on baby Kβs bed. I initially wanted to build a house frame bed, but ended up going with a tent frame. I didnβt have the wood I needed on hand, so I purchased it. The cost of the 4 wood planks was $8. I bought a 4×15β drop cloth from Loweβs for $17 to make the tent cover. In total, I spent $25 for his bed. ππΌ
I wrapped the drop cloth around the tent until it was tight then cut the square out. I cut the hemmed ends of the drop cloth off to use as the ties.Β We used the mattress from his crib and wrapped it with a white comforter we already had.
The pillow cover is from a small shop called Root Avenue and the blanket is from Modern Burlap. Both items we already had. The blanket is my favorite. It is so soft and it just gets softer with each wash.
Next I built the floating-ish shelves. I used THIS tutorial for the shelves. I loved the simplicity of them! Plus they were super easy to build and mount. I was able to screw the shelves directly into the studs, so I didnβt have to use any anchors. ππΌ
I painted the shelves SW Snowbound as well so they blended in with the wall color to give them the floating shelf look.
After the shelves were up, it was time to decorate them! I used mason jars to separate and organize the art supplies.Β
Baby K loves to color. He especially loves to color on the floors, furniture, and our dog. π³π For any parents out there struggling with the same issue, I highly recommend Chunkies Paint Sticks. The colors are vibrant and the color will wash off of anything!
Along with the art supplies, I displayed pictures, a baby fiddle leaf fig tree, books, and the alphabet plaque on the shelves. I purchased the plaque from Little Sapling Toys before baby K was born and I still love it! Itβs so well made. π CLICK HERE for details on the plaque.
Baby K also loves trains, planes, and cars, so I made sure to include them in the decor. I bought thisΒ race track rug from Amazon. It was only $26! I would highly recommend buying a rug pad to prevent it from bunching up when your little one is playing on it.
I also purchased vintage airplanes to hang over baby Kβs bed.Β This was the one thing I splurged on. I looked online and the only vintage planes I found that I loved was from Restoration Hardware Baby & Child, but they were crazy expensive! βΉοΈ So I scoured Etsy and found 3 vintage airplanes reasonably priced. β They ranged from $25 – $50 each. I found less expensive ones on Etsy as well, but they were made of plastic or wood and I wanted metal ones. π¬ Honestly, the shipping was the biggest expense, but so far two of the three have been delivered and they are in perfect condition. Baby K loves them, so it was worth it. β€ I hung them with twine and used an upholstery staple gun to secure them to the wall.
One of my favorite things to do with baby K is read to him. He gets so excited about reading time. It probably helps that I am super animated when I read to him. π His favorite books are Ten Timid Ghosts, Llama Llama Red Pajama, I Love You So, Pete the Cat The Wheels on the Bus, Good Night Trains, & Good Night Planes.Β Β I have probably read each of these books 50+ times each. Sometimes the same book multiple times in a row. πΒ His absolute favorite is Ten Timid Ghosts.
After I had the room in order, it was time to go through his toys. Holy toys! π³ I realized as I was going through them, I would need more than a basket to hold all of them. He has a lot of grocery type toys, so I decided to build him a little grocery stand. I built the stand using all scrap wood. ππΌ I used the leftover SW Snowbound paint to paint the grocery stand. For the sign I used black chalkboard paint so we could change the sign. You can watch the tutorial by going to my Instagram profile page and clicking on Grocery in my highlights.
In total, we spent right at $400. That includes the $100 on the floor, $100 on the paint and paint supplies, $26 on his bed, and $175 on decor. I would call this project budget friendly with it being a complete room makeover. π€
And that’s a wrap! I hope you enjoyed reading about baby K’s room makeover. Thank you so much for your continued support and encouragement. It means so m much to me.
Unti next time. Xo
