Oh hey! Remember me?!? Itâs been months since I posted. Iâm sorry for my absence, but this pregnancy has been tough on me. But now I am in the home stretch and have a little energy, so I decided to write about our master bathroom makeover.
When we moved into our home this past summer the room that my husband and I both agreed was the eyesore of the house was the master bathroom. It was boarder line offensive. We definitely did not get that calm vibe you would want when soaking in the bath or sitting on the toilet hiding from your kids. Here are some of the before pictures just to show you how bad it was.
I am no stranger to bathroom renovations, but this makeover took a lot longer than anticipated. Maybe itâs because I am currently 9 months pregnant. đ
I did change my mind on a lot of items and we had several hiccups with this renovation, but dang! 4 months is a really long time to have running sink water. For those out there that lack patience (like me) I know the waiting game sucks, but sometimes it is worth the wait to find the perfect pieces to create a space that reflects your style and that you truly love. This is definitely one of those instances.Â
Have you ever done a mood board? Me either, until this renovation. I did this back in September and stuck to it for the most part.
Once I had the mood board done, I started on the bathroom. The first thing I did was take all the cabinet doors and drawers off and sand them down. I used 80 grit for the first pass then 120 grit for the second pass.
The original plan was to keep them natural and apply a lime wash. But since I wasnât going to remove the entire vanity, I couldnât get the bottom part sanded…so I decided to paint.
The next thing we did was paint. I used Dove by Benjamin Moore for the walls and Urbane Bronze by Sherwin-Williams for the cabinets. I decided not to paint the back wall since we planned on covering it. I purchased THIS hardware for the cabinets.
I had this whole idea where I wanted to add dark accents and a shiplap wall. See mood board above, But then I found THIS wallpaper from Farrow & Ball and it changed everything. Iâll talk more about the wallpaper later. But before we could even think about the wallpaper we had to remove the light fixture, have electrical work done so we could install two light fixtures, and repair the drywall. In that order.
I found THESE light fixtures on Amazon and fell in love.
Thank goodness that my FIL dabbles in electrical work. He was able to do it all. It only cost us a batch of cookies. We purchased THESE Edison style light bulbs to give the bathroom a romantic feel. As soon as the electrical work was done, we had to fix the drywall. My hubby hired someone he knew and voila! It was done in a day.
It wasn’t until after we had the drywall fixed that we took the side splash pieces off to realize there was additional drywall repair needed. So instead of paying for that person to come back out, I learned how to do drywall. It wasn’t that bad. Not a fan, but really pretty easy.
Remember the wallpaper? Yeah. This is where it comes in. Now that the back wall was finished, it was time to wallpaper. Isnât it a dreamy pattern? I might be biased but the color green and peonies are my love language. My amazing FIL helped me hang it and it only took us a few hours. I used a straight razor to trim the top and sides after the paste was dry.
Tip: If you have never purchased Farrow & Ball wallpaper, know that you will also need to purchase the wallpaper paste. I didnât know that and had to wait another two weeks to get the paste so I could hang the wallpaper. You can buy wallpaper paste at your local hardware store, but I highly recommend buying their wallpaper paste. Why chance it with such expensive wallpaper?
I also recommend watching THIS video before hanging the wallpaper.
After the wallpaper was hung, my FIL installed the lights. It was all coming together. We were just waiting on the vanity top we had ordered. Due to COVID we waited several weeks. I was so excited when it was finally delivered, until I realized it was broken. Broken in many places. So we ordered another one. Which took several more weeks. Such as life.
Thank goodness that the second vanity was perfect! As you can see I also changed my mind on the mirrors. I was originally going to do round ones, but then I saw THESE and immediately changed my mind.
Once the vanity top was on, I faced the dilemma of the faucet. I went back and forth for about a month on the faucets I wanted. I couldnât decide if I wanted black or brass. After a few weeks of scouring the internet I finally found THESE faucets. When I showed my husband he was like HELL NO! đ But in Carrie fashion, I ended up ordering them anyway. And guess what? He loves them! Arenât they beautiful!?Â
How crazy is it that the faucet and the towel holder tied in beautifully? I bought them months apart.
Unfortunately this towel holder is no longer available. I purchased it at Anthropologie for reference.
With all that said, it’s done! For now at least. I still want to update the bathtub hardware and install new flooring, but in due time. Right now Iâm just happy that we finally have running sink water. It only took 4 months. NBD. However, it was TOTALLY worth it! It is hard to believe this is the same bathroom.
And thatâs a wrap! Thanks so much for stopping by. I hope you enjoyed my post. Please donât hesitate to ask me questions. You can leave a comment below or DM me via Instagram at @acarriedaffairdesignsÂ
