So this was my first attempt at making a garland with fresh greenery. I will tell you that using pine is sticky, but to me it is so worth the extra scrub when washing your hands.
I initially was going to buy a garland, but the sites I visited sell them for $40 all the way up to $200. 😳 To me that’s a lot of money when it only lasts about a month if you have it inside your house. It would last a couple weeks longer outside where there is more moisture, but that’s it.
The total cost of the garland was $18. I purchased the pine and seeded eucalyptus at a local florist. The pine was $7 and the seeded eucalyptus was $11. I had all the other materials on hand. If you have access to pine or eucalyptus trees then you could make this for free. I’ll say it again, FREE!! Heck yeah! 🙌🏼 Even if you have to purchase the clippings, you’re still saving a ton of money if you were to buy one. 😁
Note, This makes a 16 foot long thin garland. I draped my garland and had 5 feet in total of it hanging down the posts. 30 inches on each post. Since I made the garland thin, it only required 1 bunch of pine & seeded eucalyptus. If you want more volume you might need more. It all depends on how long you want it.
Now let’s talk materials.
Garland Materials:
- 1 – bunch of pine clippings
- 1 – bunch of seeded eucalyptus clippings
- Wire
- Scissors
- Wire cutters
- Optional: 5lb command strips and hooks
If you plan on hanging your garland I would recommend using 5 lb. Command strips & hooks so it’s easy cleanup when you take the garland down and you won’t have to put nails or staples into your wall or staircase banister. I hung the garland up our banister.

Now that you have all your materials gathered it’s time to make the garland.
Step 1: Cut all your pine & seeded eucalyptus into 6 to 8 inch long clippings. I left 2-3 inches of the branch to connect them.
Step 2: Take one clipping and overlap a second clipping about half way up the first clipping.
Tip: Cut all the wire strips first. So you can keep going. This saved me a ton of time. My wire clippings were about 4-5 inches long.
Step 3: Wrap the wire around the clippings where you overlapped them and pull it tight as you are wrapping the wire. I did cut all the wire first. The picture below is for demonstration purposes only.
Step 4: Repeat steps 2-3 until you achieve your desired garland length.
Note: If you are not hanging the garland you can skip step 5.
Step 5: Hang the garland using the Command strips and hooks. I used the bow to cover the hook. Clever huh?! ☺️
Step 6: wedge the seeded eucalyptus in between the clippings where the wire is. You can also attach the seeded eucalyptus with wire, but wedging it in saves time.

This project took me about 35 minutes total. So all you moms out there could have a beautiful garland completed before nap time is even over. Score!
