Cranberry Apple Pie Recipe

I love to attempt new recipes. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. This one worked! I literally just went with my gut and started adding things and WOW it was amazing! I was actually going to take this pie to our family Christmas…but I needed to try it to make sure it tasted good first, right? Right! Or at least that’s what I’am telling myself. 😂 I actually liked it so much that I decided to share it all with you. 🌲

See below for the recipe.

Baking Utensils

1 – 9 inch pie pan
Large mixing bowl
Strainer or colander
Wooden spoon
Small bowl
Pastry brush
Baking spray
Aluminum foil

Ingredients

2 cups of Cranberries
5-6 Granny Smith Apples
1 cup of granulated sugar
1.5 cups of water
1 cup of dark brown sugar
1.5 tbsp of cinnamon
1 tsp of almond extract
Pinch of salt
1/3 cup of melted butter

Crust

2 – 9” pie crusts (I just use store bought)

I always do an egg wash on the top of my crusts, but it is completely optional. If you want to do an egg wash you’ll need the following items.

1 large egg
1/4 cup of sugar in the raw

Preheat the over to 350 degrees before prepping the pie.

Step 1: Add the cranberries, 2 cups of water, and 1 cup of sugar to a medium sized saucepan and turn the burner to medium heat. Stir occasionally and bring to a boil.

Step 2: Once the cranberries are done, use a colander to strain all the water out, then set aside.

Step 3: Peel & slice the apples.

Step 4: In a large mixing bowl combine all the ingredients: Apples, cranberries, brown sugar, almond extract, cinnamon, salt, melted butter, and mix well.

Step 5: Spray your pie pan with baking spray then lay one of your crusts in the pan.

Step 6: Pour the filling into the pie pan.

Step 7: Trim the crust and decorate as desired with the second crust. I did this pie around Christmas time, so did a Christmas theme.

The next two steps are for the egg wash. If you don’t want to do the egg wash skip to step 10.

Step 8: In a small bowl whisk the egg then use a pastry brush to brush the egg wash on the top of the pie crust.

Step 9: Sprinkle the sugar in the raw over the top of the pie crust.

Step 10: Cut a piece of aluminum foil and spray it with baking spray. Tear the foil into strips and cover the edges of the pie. This is to prevent the edges from burning.

Step 11: Bake the pie for 30 minutes on 350 then rotate the pie, remove the foil, and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until pie crust is golden brown.

Tip: I put my pies on a cookie sheet and rotate the pie every 10 minutes to achieve an even baked crust. Using a cookie sheet also helps keep the foil in place when rotating the pie.

Step 12: Remove from the oven and allow it to cool and serve!
